깊은 적갈색이 잔 안에서 그윽하게 빛난다. 셰리로 이름난 스페이사이드의 글렌파클라스가 1966년에 증류해 38년을 보낸 보틀링이다. 코에는 졸인 건포도와 오렌지 마멀레이드, 오래된 가죽의 향이 깊게 피어오른다. 44.6도의 둥근 입질에서는 다크 초콜릿과 무화과, 은근한 향신료의 단맛이 천천히 풀려난다. 옛 시절의 셰리가 빚어낸 원숙한 깊이가 끝에서 마른 과일과 가죽으로 오래도록 맴돈다.

And to be really honest, we were only here at all because we couldn’t get tickets for New York’s hip favourites Gogol Bordello , a sort of Pogues meets the Three Mustaphas Three high energy punk outfit with an Eastern European twist, fronted by Ukranian Eugene Hutz. So instead we headed for the Mean Fiddler , a tiny aluminium door squeezed between a tacky London souvenir store and a sex shop on the Charing Cross road. It’s a box like basement, sort of attached to the Pickle Factory next door, and owned by the same eponymous outfit (Mean Fiddler that is, not the Pickle Factory Group).
