잔을 몇 번 흔들어 향을 열고 코를 가까이 하면 축축한 지하실의 석탄과 시가 재, 그을음이 먼저 인사하고 단맛이라곤 거의 없는 마른 향이 코를 파고든다. 한 모금 머금으면 탈리스커 특유의 검은 후추와 짭조름한 바다 기운이 쌉싸름한 오렌지, 석탄의 쓴맛과 얽혀 혀를 조인다. 리필 호그스헤드에서 9년을 보낸 이 위스키는 달콤함 대신 건조하고 강인한 개성으로 승부한다. 삼키면 바닷물에 적셔 끈 시가 재의 짠 여운이 입안에 오래 남는다.

In short, it is very much on an old heap of coal at the back of a slightly damp cellar, with cigar ashes, saltpetre, soot, old liqueurs made from buds, chiefly fir, and bitter cocoa from the sherry. Not a gram of sweetness, everything is dry as a truncheon blow. We rather like this. Let us see whether the palate is a little tired, which, all things considered, would almost be good news.
