잔을 코끝으로 가져가면 1970년에 병입된 발베니 8년이 평소의 발베니와 전혀 다른 메마르고 금속적인 향을 풀어낸다. 향을 들이켜면 먼지와 자갈 같은 광물성에 박하와 셀러리, 캐러웨이 씨앗의 풀내음이 겹친다. 비정상적으로 높은 도수를 한 모금 머금으면 의외로 마르고 쌉쌀한 질감이 입을 채우며 박하 리큐어 같은 인상을 남긴다. 삼키고 나면 짧지만 살구 같은 과일의 끝맛이 가볍게 스쳐 사라진다.

this is very un-Balvenie, very dry, slightly metallic, with whiffs of dust and gravel (or mum’s old vacuum cleaner). It’s also very grassy and bizarrely mentholated. Peppermint, celery, dill, then caraway seeds and touches of cultivated mushrooms. Smells more and more like some mint liqueur…

oh well, it’s really weak, dry and quite bitter. Stale? Taste of light?
