두어 번 돌린 뒤 코를 가져가면 커피 원두와 코코아, 그을린 고무가 셰리보다 먼저 나선다. 계속 맡으면 호두 껍질 물과 등잔 기름, 부싯돌 같은 광물 냄새가 뒤에서 층을 만든다. 한 모금을 머금으면 초록 차와 석회, 아스피린의 쓴맛이 혀를 바짝 마르게 하고 가죽이 그 위를 덮는다. 삼키면 단맛 대신 마른 낙엽과 카카오의 쌉쌀함이 목 뒤에 깊게 머문다. 46도 안에서도 이 15년은 놀랄 만큼 꼿꼿하고 절제된 얼굴을 보여 준다.
